As of February 23, Grey’s Anatomy will be saying goodbye to Ellen Pompeo, so it’s time to return to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. However, the medical drama also wants to pay tribute to two of Meredith Grey’s loved ones as the veteran actress gets ready to leave her role as a series regular.
The ABC program revealed a few details about what viewers can anticipate from the second half of season 19 in a recent TVLine report. According to the source, “on Meredith’s last day at Grey Sloan, the doctors plan a goodbye surprise” before she departs for Boston to carry out research on Alzheimer’s in the show’s pilot episode, “I’ll Follow the Sun.” Additionally, it says that Nick (Scott Speedman), who is currently attempting to arrange a long-distance relationship with her, “confronts her about the future of their relationship.”
Fans might not have noticed a subtle nod to two other characters despite the intriguing premise.
Meredith’s late husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and best friend Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), who said in her final moments during season 10, are both mentioned in the episode’s title “You have a remarkable mind and are a gifted surgeon. Do not let his desires override your needs. Although he is very dreamy, you are the sun, not him.”
Grey’s Anatomy did not only pay tribute to Meredith’s connections to Derek and Cristina, though. They made sure to share significant moments with all three of them when the show released an emotional trailer showing a montage of the character’s journey at Grey Sloan. People naturally noticed it and had to comment.
