Lady Gaga is portraying a cheerful expression. A new image from “Joker: Folie à Deux,” featuring star Joaquin Phoenix in Gaga’s arms, has been released by director Todd Phillips.
Happy Valentine’s Day, says Phillips’ succinct Instagram caption. The photo serves as the public’s first glimpse of Gaga in the picture. Gaga posted the picture on her own social media pages as well.
According to reports, Gaga is portraying the DC Comics character Harley Quinn, a psychiatrist who develops feelings for the Joker before adopting his sinister ways. Quinn was previously portrayed by Margot Robbie in the “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey” movies. The character is voiced by Kaley Cuoco in the ongoing “Harley Quinn” HBO Max animated series.
Last August, Gaga formally announced her participation in the “Joker” sequel. The movie is thought to be a musical.
The first “Joker” from Phillips was a critical and financial success in 2019, becoming the most successful R-rated movie ever. A major contender at the year’s Academy Awards, it garnered 11 nominations, including wins for Joaquin Phoenix for best actor and Hildur Gunadóttir for best original score. It won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The shocking success of “Joker” quickly sparked rumors of a follow-up. The newly established DC Studios and its co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran have largely ignored Phillips’ project, despite the fact that the DC media landscape has changed since the original movie. The upcoming DC movies’ ongoing storylines won’t be affected by the “Joker” sequel.
Five years to the day after the first movie’s release, on October 9, 2024, Warner Bros. will release “Joker: Folie à Deux” in theaters.
